Cardhu Distillery, my favorite distillery, is a renowned Scotch whisky distillery located in the Speyside region of Scotland. It is situated near the village of Knockando in Morayshire. The distillery is known for producing single malt Scotch whisky, primarily for use in blended Scotch whiskies, although it also releases its own expressions as part of its core range.
History
The distillery has a rich history dating back to 1824 when it was founded by John Cumming. Initially operating under the name Cardow Distillery, it later became known as Cardhu and managed by Elizabeth Cumming. It was originally run by the Cumming family and later passed through several owners, including the famous whisky blending company Johnnie Walker & Sons. Cardhu Distillery is located in a picturesque setting amidst the rolling hills of Speyside. Its location near the “River Spey” provides access to the pure, soft water that is crucial for whisky production.
Cardhu Whisky Profile
Cardhu distillery is known for its smooth and approachable style of whisky, characterized by fruity and honeyed notes with a hint of spice. The distillery primarily uses traditional copper pot stills for distillation, and it ages its whisky in oak casks. Cardhu offers a range of single malt Scotch whiskies, including:
- Cardhu 12 Year Old: A flagship expression aged for a minimum of 12 years, known for its balance of sweet and fruity flavors.
- Cardhu Gold Reserve: A no-age-statement expression with a richer and more complex profile, featuring notes of toffee, vanilla, and orchard fruits.
- Cardhu Amber Rock: Another no-age-statement release with a focus on honeyed sweetness and subtle spice.
Overall, Cardhu Distillery holds a special place in the Scotch whisky industry, known for producing high-quality single malt whiskies that are both versatile for blending and enjoyed on their own merits by whisky lovers around the world.
